When the Caribbean meets The Netherlands
In the warm embrace of St. Maarten, Dutch-French Caribbean, my life began.
The island was a cradle for me, just as the sandy beaches are to turtle hatchlings. I was like the sea turtles there, drawn instinctively to the surf, learning the push and pull of the waves. Surfing was not just a sport; it was a communion, a way to understand life's ebb and flow.
The sea was my school, the sun and salt my companions. But like the turtles, the current of my destiny pulled me away, across the vast, deep Atlantic. I left the comfort of warm waters, trading the familiarity of home for the unknown. The journey was long, filled with solitude and the blue infinity.
Amsterdam awaited, a world of difference and canals, where water still held sway but in a manner so unlike the Caribbean. The city's waterways, lined with history, became my new guide. Here, the waves I rode were those of culture, knowledge, and change.
I settled into the rhythm of this new life, finding solace in Amsterdam's own unique beauty. The turtle's journey was mine, and mine was its, an odyssey not just of distance but of growth and transformation.
And now, when I pass the canals, I think of those Caribbean shores, but also of the water beneath me, connecting me to a past that is never too far away. The turtle and I, we both found our way, carried by currents seen and unseen, towards the shores that shape us.
The green and yellows of the turtle's shell has been replaced with the delftblue and white colors associated with The Netherlands, but no matter how far we roam, we carry with us the essence of our beginnings, and in our hearts, the worlds we've embraced along the way.
